Nutrition for Immunity

You mean what you eat can actually make you sick or keep you from getting sick?! Yep. We said it. The immune system is a complex highway of various types of transporters that decide what our body labels as “acceptable” and what it does not. Believe it or not, even some of the healthy foods that we love (such as nuts, seeds, and spices) cab contain higher amounts of immune system compounds.
Interestingly, did you know that when you are stressed your body releases histamines? Histamines are chemicals that your body releases to fight off substances that your body sees as “foreign and unacceptable”. If our body is too overwhelmed with too much stress, we can actually end up lowering our threshold for tolerance to certain foods that our body would otherwise deem as “acceptable”! This is a huge deal folks.
So how, you may ask, can we baby our sweet immune system back to a place where it feels safe and capable to take on any food? Well it just so happens to be simple. What healthy eating all boils down to when we put it into labels is this: Eat Fresh Foods.
Fresh foods such as fruits, vegetables and unprocessed meat have not been modified for sale at the store. They are not cured, salted, marinated or seasoned. Most importantly they really don’t contain any artificial or fake ingredients that contribute to inflammation in the body! What people do not often realize is that the inflammation we gain by eating processed foods causes a real stress to our body – and that stress does in fact cause our body to release histamine. The more physical stress we put on our bodies by eating ultra-processed foods such as chips, cookies, candy, nachos, fries and all the others – the more intolerant our immune system becomes.
